While some human trafficking legislation is already in effect, such as that passed by the U.S. Congress ten years ago, there is yet an estimated 2 million child sex workers who toil in what the United Nations deems the fastest growing criminal enterprise worldwide.
A compelling glance into the world of child prostitution, HOLLY has been called "a work of serious, contemplative outrage" (New York Sun). In this true story, Patrick (Ron Livingston), an American card shark and dealer of stolen artifacts, has been comfortably numb in Cambodia for years when he encounters Holly (Thuy Nguyen), a 12-year-old Vietnamese girl, in the K11 red-light village. The girl has been sold by her impoverished family and smuggled across the border to work as a prostitute. Holly's virginity makes her a lucrative prize, and when she is sold to a child trafficker, Patrick embarks on a frantic search to bring her to safety.
Harsh yet poetic, this feature forms part of the K11 Project, a charitable foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the epidemic of child trafficking and the sex-slavery trade. The film's co-producer Guy Jacobson, a New York lawyer, formed the K11 Project after being propositioned by young girls during a 2002 trip to Cambodia. The project's producers, who endured substantial hardships and risk while shooting in Cambodia, have also founded the RedLight Children Campaign, a worldwide grassroots initiative generating conscious concern and inspiring immediate action against child sexploitation.
The UN previously sponsored a screening of HOLLY, which was attended by Hillary Clinton, Susan Sarandon and Ron Livingston on the host comittee, and which was held to benefit the Somaly Mam Foundation, a nonprofit public charity dedicated to ending modern day slavery around the world.
