Screening the Issues
A film and discussion series sponsored by the United Nations Association of New York
Cinema has long been recognized as one of the most effective ways to educate and motivate a community. Since January this year, Screening the Issues has been promoting the work of the United Nations with screening events that serve a dual purpose: to commend the intelligence of filmmakers who have the courage and passion to address crucial human concerns while presenting important global issues to a culturally aware New York audience. The mission of UNA-NY is to educate, inspire and mobilize the NYC community and to raise awareness of the vital work of the United Nations.
These screenings are held at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York City in a state of the art screening room. They are followed by lively discussions with the filmmakers themselves, or experts from the United Nations, about issues illustrated by or dealt with in the films. As seating is limited, and because of this special opportunity for dialogue with our guests, we strongly encourage reservations for these events.
To date we have presented: Fateless, commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day; Pray the Devil Back to Hell, celebrating International Women's Day, about the courageous efforts of Liberian women to overcome the end years of warlord violence; FLOW: For Love of Water, focusing on developing nations and the corporate takeover of water in those countries; The End of Poverty?, about global inequality and why poverty exists when there is so much wealth in the world; The Reckoning, the epic story of the battle for the International Criminal Court; and Afghan Star, which looks directly at issues of freedom and media modernisation in contemporary Afghanistan.
We showcase films that represent a wide range of countries and speak out for pressing issues such as human rights, global health, climate change, natural resources and water scarcity, peacekeeping, poverty, nuclear proliferation and international terrorism. In our interdependent world, the resolution of these issues and challenges are crucial to international peace and security.
