An Insider's Guide to the United Nations
This seminar will offer an overview of the United Nations' multifaceted presence and impact around the globe shedding light on the history, key players and current role on the world stage. The program will help demystify how the UN works and examines its accomplishments and challenges in dealing with international conflicts, promoting human rights and development and providing humanitarian aid.

A Fractured Friendship: US-Pakistan Relations and the End-Game in Afghanistan
We will analyze the historical and current relationship between the United States and Pakistan and put it in a regional context, with a view to coming up with ideas for repairing it. There will be a focus on Pakistan's internal policy and politics and how that affects the relationship with a class of narratives on both sides.

Does Diplomacy Have a Role in Fighting Terrorism?
Diplomats have always been the targets of terrorists. But what role can diplomats play in combating terrorism? Isn't terrorism a problem that the military and security services need to tackle? Taking a historical perspective, Alexander Evans will set out how diplomats can be useful — and how.
Faculty: Alexander Evans is a senior fellow at Yale's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, and a counsellor in the British diplomatic service. He is speaking in a personal capacity.

The Asia-Pacific Century: Fulfilling a Promise
The Asia-Pacific region has achieved significant economic growth and poverty reduction in the last decades, and has shown resilience during the recent economic and financial crisis. Yet, it is still home to more than half of the world's poor, and will not achieve many of the non-income millennium development goals by 2015. The presentation will discuss achievements and challenges for the region, which is posed to account for nearly half of the world's gross domestic product by 2050, and must make difficult choices to ensure the social and environmental sustainability of this development.

UN Action to Counter Terrorism
In January 2011, the Security Council elected Ambassador Puri, the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, as the chair of the Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) for that year. In this seminar, Ambassador Puri will take us through the mandate and recent work of the CTC, effective counter terrorism policies, the complexities of bringing terrorists to justice and the importance of international cooperation to fight terrorism.
