Hardeep Singh Puri
Hardeep Singh Puri is the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations. At the time of his appointment, Mr. Puri was Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, a post he assumed in June 2008, having previously served as Ambassador to Brazil from January 2006. Earlier, he was Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva between March 2002 and November 2005.
Mr. Puri's diplomatic experience also includes service as Deputy High Commissioner (Deputy Ambassador) to the United Kingdom (January 1999-March 2002), and postings to India's High Commission in Sri Lanka (December 1984-March 1988), and its Embassy in Japan (January 1976-October 1978).
Since joining the Foreign Service in 1974, Mr. Puri gained extensive multilateral experience as First Secretary (GATT) in India's Permanent Mission in Geneva from September 1981 to December 1984, and on secondment to the United Nations as Coordinator for the Multilateral Trade Negotiations Project in Geneva (March 1988-July 1991).
Mr. Puri holds a post-graduate degree in history. He is married and has two daughters.
