R. Barry Spaulding
R. Barry Spaulding is a cross-cultural management consultant, executive coach, and trainer with over 35 years of global experience in leadership development, management excellence, and strategy formulation, all promoting effective Asian-Western interactions.
Barry received a bachelors in Asian studies and political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara; his program included a year at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He holds a masters in international affairs from Columbia University's School of International Affairs. He is a fluent speaker of Mandarin and knows basic Cantonese.
In addition to wide experience throughout Asia, Barry has 25 years of China-specific experience including manager within the Beijing representative office of the First National Bank of Chicago; head of Chase Manhattan's New York China Group; senior advisor to a provincial Chinese government; and manager within Chase China Trade Advisors (a consultancy that addressed U.S. joint venture negotiations). Barry also served for over a decade as head of New York State's International Division, in which capacity he was responsible for concluding and implementing New York's "sister state" relationship in China. With over three decades of business experience at the intersection of Asia and the West, Barry brings a richly textured perspective to his coachees and clients.
Independent since 1995, Barry has completed, among others, a management project for the New York office of an Asian government; a team integration project involving the U.S. and Shanghai offices of a consumer electronics company; and a multitier training program for a U.S. automotive company. These assignments and others addressed a wide range of cross-cultural issues such as effective communication, leadership development, and virtual team facilitation. Barry's clients have included Chinese government entities in Jiangsu, Suzhou, and Hong Kong as well as global corporations such as American Express, Merrill Lynch, Citicorp, Estee Lauder, Morgan Stanley, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Bombardier, Columbus Circle Investments/PIMCO, Hess Petroleum, Anadarko Petroleum, Walt Disney, Schering, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, and Parker.
During 2006, Barry received coach certification from the Global Coaching Network's EAGLE program (Executive Assessment and Global Leadership Excellence). He is also certified to use DISC and the Cultural Orientations Indicator. He has provided executive coaching for senior Asian and Western leaders from a wide range of global industries including oil, financial services, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products. He routinely coaches U.S. managers relocating to China and Chinese managers relocating to the U.S.
An avid traveler, Barry lives in Manhattan. His pastimes include running, yoga, qigong, and the collecting of Asian painting, calligraphy, and Chinese porcelain.
