Please join us at our 2023 Annual Meeting, when UNA-NYC will celebrate our accomplishments over the past year, and our guest speaker will be Irish Ambassador Fergal Mythen, joined in conversation with UNA-NYC Executive Vice President Robin van Puyenbroeck.

Ambassador Fergal Mythen, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on 26 August 2022.

Prior to this appointment, Fergal spent considerable periods of his career working for the Government of Ireland in support of the Northern Ireland peace process and implementation of the Good Friday Agreement – working for the International Fund for Ireland (1990-92), on Justice & Security issues (1999-2003 and 2005-07), and on Northern Ireland political affairs (2007-09).

Most recently, as Director-General of the Ireland, UK and Americas Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2022, he led the Departmental team working on Northern Ireland peace process issues, Irish-British relations (including the impact of Brexit), and Irish-US and Irish-Canadian bilateral relations, as well as relations with the Latin America-Caribbean region.

Between 2013 and 2017, Fergal was Director-General of the Department’s Corporate Services Division, with responsibility for human resources, finance, ICT, property management, and corporate governance and compliance issues.

He has twice served in the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Union in Brussels, covering two Irish EU Council Presidencies, firstly as Middle East / North Africa Attaché from 2003 to 2005, and as Antici Counsellor from 2009 to 2013.

Earlier in his career, in 1996-97, Fergal was seconded to the European Community Monitoring Mission in the former Yugoslavia, based in Sarajevo, BiH.

He was Director of the Department’s Human Rights Unit from 1997 to 1999.
Fergal also served as Consular Officer in the Embassy of Ireland to Italy, Rome, from 1992 to 1996.

Born in 1968, Fergal studied History and English in Trinity College Dublin and Business Studies in University College Dublin.

He is married to Ms. Ciara Delaney and they have four children.

Robin van Puyenbroeck

Robin van Puyenbroeck is Executive Director of Business Development for the World Trade Centers Association.

Mr. van Puyenbroeck a purpose-driven leader with more than 20 years’ experience in international business development, partnerships, corporate strategy, and non-profit leadership. He most recently served as Vice President-Business Development for Ethan Allen Global, based in Danbury, Connecticut, where he effectively managed and grew a network of international licensees and developed strategies for building alliances and B2B contract business.

Previously, Mr. van Puyenbroeck worked as an international business and partnerships consultant, counseling clients on strategic communications, political and organizational strategies, as well as business transactions that require a deep appreciation of markets and geopolitical context. Leveraging his expertise in the Middle East and Central Asia he advised a wide range of organizations, from emerging market corporations to policy think tanks, on strategic reviews, investment promotion campaigns, market introductions and business development.

Prior to his consulting work, Mr. van Puyenbroeck worked with ING Group where he held progressive leadership roles within the company's Global Management Programme with broad experiences in business development, staff function, client relationship management, finance and project management. Mr. van Puyenbroeck began his career as an attorney for the Ernst & Young law firm in Brussels, and he holds J.D. and L.L.M degrees in international law from Ghent University and Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium.

Mr. van Puyenbroeck has leadership experience in the IGO/NGO sector, including his current roles as Under-Secretary-General for the EUCLID Intergovernmental Organization, and as Executive Vice President & Treasurer of the United Nations Association of New York. He speaks five languages (Dutch, English, French, Spanish and German) and has traveled extensively on business in Europe, the Middle East, Central and Greater Asia, and North America.
