At a time of heightened global tensions and growing nuclear risks, the Nuclear Abolition Day Appeal represents a coordinated effort by civil society to encourage concrete action toward disarmament and the prevention of nuclear war.
September 26 has been declared by the UN General Assembly as the International Day for the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (Nuclear Abolition Day). Every year on this date, the UN holds a high-level meeting of world leaders to discuss “urgent and effective measures” to achieve global nuclear disarmament. At the same time, civil society organizations organize events and undertake actions to support nuclear weapons abolition.
In 2025, for the first time, civil society organizations from around the world joined together to establish a common platform and joint activities on Nuclear Abolition Day. The main activities were a social media action Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in our Hands (which UNA-NYC promoted and participated in) and a Joint Appeal that was endorsed by over 600 organizations and more than 1200 additional individuals from 99 countries. The Joint Appeal was presented to the high-level plenary on September 26 and to the UN First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) on October 17. It will next be brought before the Review Conference of States Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to be held at the United Nations in New York from April 27 to May 22, 2026.
At a time of heightened global tensions and growing nuclear risks, this Appeal represents a coordinated effort by civil society to encourage concrete action toward disarmament and the prevention of nuclear war.
Key points of the Nuclear Abolition Day Appeal include:
Affirming that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible under international law and humanity’s shared moral framework
Standing down nuclear forces and reducing the operational readiness of nuclear arsenals
Committing to the complete global elimination of nuclear weapons within a defined timeframe
Ending public and private investments in nuclear weapons programs and reducing military expenditures dedicated to them
Redirecting those resources toward strengthening the United Nations, advancing peacebuilding and conflict resolution, addressing climate challenges, and meeting urgent human needs
The Appeal aligns closely with the founding principles and mission of the United Nations, which has long affirmed that nuclear disarmament is essential to eliminating the danger of nuclear war and achieving international peace and security.
