William Karg has a career that has been a blend of art, architecture and planning. His work as a gallery director has kept him engaged in art exhibitions of emerging and established African artists, and with universities, private collectors and museums that collect these contemporary artists. He has worked with governments in the U.S. and Africa to design affordable housing and neighborhood transformation projects. As an architect he has completed residential and historic renovations in urban and rural communities. Many of the properties he designed he continued to own and manage.
Mr. Karg established the first art gallery in the U.S. dedicated solely to showing, and being a resource for, contemporary African fine art. For almost 30 years he has curated shows, lectured and worked with more than 35 artists from 10 African countries.
His work in affordable housing has included serving as the Director of Planning for the Boston Housing Authority, and as Low Cost Housing Officer for the Central Government of Botswana. He has worked with students from the Boston Architectural Center, introducing them to participatory design techniques in public housing communities.
Advocationally, Mr. Karg dedicates significant time and energy to the United Nations Association of New York, where he has served on the Board of Directors for more than 12 years. While serving as President of the Board, Mr. Karg helped to guide UNA-NYC through a transition from a voluntary organization to one that was professionally staffed and managed.
Mr. Karg’s long term objectives are bifurcated: 1) to use his life skills to contribute in a meaningful way to the planning of developing-world urban centers with an emphasis on providing sustainable communities for the one billion people who presently live in substandard conditions; and 2) to use his contacts and experience in the art world to bring recognition to contemporary African art and sucess to the artists he represents.
